The Apostolou family tree seems the perfect vision of what an ordinary American family can truly be like. But this tree is about to be cut down due to an unthinkable incident. At a simple birthday party, Hector Apostolou's cousin Harry witnesses a misbehaving child, Hugo Weschler, throwing a tantrum. Despite his efforts to calm the kid down, a kick in the leg by Hugo sets Harry off and he slaps him. This act is only the beginning of a downward spiral to the family falling apart.
